Yesterday I attended PodCamp Toronto 2011 – Canada’s largest gathering of members of the new media community. One of the sessions I attended was “Selling Ads on your Personal Blog” presented by Andrea Tomkins.
The Blog: Peek Inside the Fishbowl a popular Ottawa Parenting Blog
Andrea began blogging in 1999 when her first daughter was born. The blog began as an online journal where she wrote about daily life as a new Mom. At first it was read only by her mom, her mother-in-law and her closest friends but before she knew it people she had never met were reading her blog. Andrea now blogs about parenting, healthy living, design, travel, and fun family-friendly activities in the Ottawa area. Peek Inside the Fishbowl has become a popular Ottawa parenting blog that receives an average of 1350 views per day.
Andrea Tomkins is a freelance writer and photographer. Her photography and writing has appeared in a variety of national and local publications. She writes regularly for the Ottawa edition of SavvyMom. Andrea also loves to talk about blogging and the culture of the web. She lives in Ottawa with her husband and two daughters.
Peek Inside the Fishbowl has attracted mainstream media attention including Reader’s Digest, Chatelaine, Canadian Family Magazine, the Toronto Star and the Ottawa Citizen. Andrea has also made multiple appearances on CTV and on CBC radio.
Peek Inside the Fishbowl has also received some recognition from the blogging world. In 2010, the Fishbowl received second place in the Lifetime Achievement category of the Canadian Weblog Awards, a juried competition of many great Canadian blogs. In 2007, the Fishbowl was chosen by the Banff New Media Institute – Canada’s internationally respected art and digital research innovation centre – to be featured on culture.ca, a portal for great Canadian new media portfolios.
Andrea’s goal in selling ad space on her blog was to cover the costs of running the blog. She now has eleven paid ads. She isn’t making a fortune but she is making a profit, developing relationships with local businesses and her loyal readership.
Congratulations Andrea on your blogging success and thanks for a great session at PodCamp Toronto.
