Dropbox – store, sync, and, share files online

dropboxDropbox is a file service which uses cloud computing to enable users to backup and share files and folders with others across the Internet using file synchronization.

File Backup:
Yesterday a data recovery expert told me that you need to have your files in at least three places. Storing files on your computer and one backup location just isn’t enough. Any file you put into your Dropbox folder is automatically backed up to their servers. By default, Dropbox keeps 30 days of history for all your files, so even if you’ve deleted a file from your Dropbox you can still restore it. The free 2GB account is perfect for backing up smaller files and documents but you may wish to move to a larger paid account (up to 100GB) for backing up more and bigger files. You can also get more space by inviting your friends. For every friend your refer to Dropbox, you’ll both get 250 MB of bonus space (up to a limit of 8 GB). Putting crucial files in Dropbox as an off-site backup is very wise. Dropbox may just save your bacon — or your files, at least.

File Synchronization
Drop a file into your Dropbox on one computer and it shows up almost instantly on all your other computers that also have Dropbox installed (Windows, Mac, and Linux too!), be it at home, school or work. You can even download Dropbox apps for your smartphone or mobile device (iPhone, iPad, Android, and Blackberry). Everything in your Dropbox is available from the Dropbox website, too.

File Sharing:
I love how easy file sharing is with Dropbox. No need to send me batches of emails or mail a cd … simply follow these steps to share a folder with me to send me your web content:

Send me an email to wishes@dandelionwebdesign.com and I’ll be happy to send you a Dropbox invitation and we will both earn 250 MB of bonus space. Or you can just go to dropbox.com.

  1. Install Dropbox on your computer – it’s free!
  2. When Dropbox installs it will walk you through creating an account. Installation will also add a little icon down in the bottom right of your taskbar and place an icon on your desktop.
  3. Click on the taskbar icon then select launch Dropbox website or go to dropbox.com
  4. Login to your account if you aren’t already logged in and create a new folder and give it a clear appropriate name – if the purpose of this folder is to send me your website content then I suggest you give it your website or business name
  5. Hover your mouse over the new folder and you will see a little arrow appear on the right side. Click on the arrow and a drop down list will appear. From the list select invite to folder.
  6. Click invite to folder and a share window will popup. Here you can enter the email addresses of those you want to invite and send a little note with the email. Put my email address wishes@dandelionwebdesign.com in the list and I will receive an email invitation to access the folder.
  7. Once I accept this invitation I will be able to access the folder

Thanks for the post that clearly explains what Dropbox is, how we can use it and how to get started. I plan on using Dropbox with my clients.
